Argh! Which homeopathic remedy do I choose?

Updated: Sep 25, 2022

So, you've got a couple of remedies in mind, but you are not sure which one to go for. I understand. It can be really hard to choose especially when you are feeling poorly, and energy and patience is low. Here are my top tips to help you select a remedy with confidence rather than feeling like you are taking a stab in the dark.

Tip #1 - Modalities

Super useful in helping you make a decision; this means what makes your symptoms better or worse. For example: Rhus tox has pain that worsens with cold, damp weather while Causticum pain improves in such conditions. Both are well indicated for joint problems, but these are keynotes which help differentiate them.

Tip #2 - Aetiology

This refers to the causation of the complaint; was there any event that preceded the onset of the symptoms? To illustrate, those needing Aconite may have symptoms that commence at night after the person has been chilled or exposed to dry, cold wind earlier that day whereas Gelsenium symptoms follow fight, bad news, excitement or anticipation.

"I finally got a good night's sleep, and the cramping has reduced. Thank you, Laura." – Katie, Stafford.

Tip #3 - Discharge

Not the nicest words I know but this can tell you a lot! What colour is it? Does it burn or is bland? Colds with a clear nasal mucus like egg-white indicates Natrum muriaticum but acrid and burning discharges could point towards Arsencium.

Tip #4 - Emotional State

How do you feel in yourself? Bryonia is called 'the grumpy bear' in homeopathic circles and for good reason! The patient is very irritable and wants to be left alone. Pulsatilla types on the other hand, crave affection and sympathy.

Tip #5 - Strange, rare or peculiar (SRP)

Always look for any unusual symptoms. An example would be: burning pains which are better for heat. This is a SRP to the person needing Arsencium.

And after all of this, remember...

Homeopathy is completely safe. You will not do any harm by taking a remedy that is not 100% the right match. If you don't get relief after taking a couple of doses, move on to another remedy - maybe the other one that you were thinking about?
